Orientation Event by Designers' Consortium 


  1. It is an individual event.

  2. Participants must attempt to build a functional Rube Goldberg machine consisting of household items.

  3. Rube Goldberg is a chain reaction-type machine or contraption intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overly complicated way.

  4. The goal of the machine to be submitted is to toggle a switch. (Example: switching on and off a fan)

  5. Video must consist of two parts,

    1. Part 1: Thoroughly explain your Rube Goldberg machine with the items used in your machine

    2. Part 2: A clear video of the working of your Rube Goldberg machine 

  6. The machine must consist of at least 4 unique sequential actions.

  7. No human intervention is allowed apart from the initiation of the machine.

  8. The final winners will be selected based on the judging criteria.

  9. Total time allotted for submission: 24 hours

  10. The video and machine description which contains the list of items and any additional information necessary will be collected via Google Drive links.

  11. The decision from the Designers' Consortium is final.

Judging Criteria:


  1. If the machine works or not (criterion for direct elimination)

  2. Complexity and creativity in the idea and design

  3. Variety of items used for the mechanism
